Model 5002

This is the broadcast/shortwave band version of the Model 5000, and was manufactured in 1946-47. The Model 5002 was available in the brown and ivory version, but also interestingly in several attractive hammertone paint colors.

Tube Complement:

1. 12SA7: Converter
2. 12SK7: IF Amplifier
3. 12SQ7: 2nd Detector, AVC, 1st Audio Amplifier
4. 35L6GT: Output Amplifier
5. 35Z5GT: Rectifier
Features of 5002 models:

1. The airplane pointer are used, but the dial was modified to show the shortwave band (more below).

2. A three-hole rainbow cabinet unlike the two-hole cabinet in used in the Model 5000.

3. The right hole accommodates the tuning knob..

4. A middle hole accommodates the band selector

5. The left hole accommodates the on/off switch and volume control.

6. Above the middle hole are "BC" and "SW" decals. Many of these seem to have worn off with time.

7. The antenna consists of a length of wire wound on a reel (see below).

8. A guarantee notice sticker is present on the bottom of the case.

9. The back is attached to the chassis by four slot screws.

Variations found among 5002 models:

1.Dials used were of two main types: R8143-24 and R8143-32. The main difference was that the R8143-24 dial featured the "Northern Electric" logo.

2. Some of the dials contained an additional "Northern Electric" decal logo located below the main design. Interrestingly, this decal cannot be seen once the chassis is within the cabinet (Col No. 034).

3. Speakers are found in two shapes: round and rounded square. Both speaker shapes are stamped with manufacturer's part No. R12791.

4. Screws attaching dial to chassis are of two types: slot and Robertson.

5. It seems based on the decals on the back, that Model 5002 examples can be catagorized as early or late models. These radios were certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and a decal affixed. The CSA had changed its name from the Canadian Engineering Standards Association (CESA) in 1944, but was still apparently using old decals as late as 1946. Therefore, I believe that Model 5002 examples with a CESA decal were made before those with the CSA label. There are also differences in the other labels of the earlier vs. later Model 5002 examples. Only the later Model 5002 examples have the Baby Champ label on the back. Following this line, it also seems that the round R12791 speakers used in earlier Model 5002 examples were replaced with the rounded-square R12791 speakers in later Model 5002 examples.

6. The chassis used in the earlier Model 5002 examples differed from that used in the later models. The later model chassis possessed an additional plate on the back which was placed between the IF transformers and the back fiberboard. This plate can be seen between the spaces of the back fiberboard on the later Model 5002 back scan below.
